In
addition to the extensive investments in Guizhou, Shui On has established
a sizeable cement group in Chongqing through Chongqing
TH Cement Group, in which Shui On has a 50% stake. The first
rotary kiln built under the joint venture commenced operation in
early 1998. With the construction of the second rotary kiln in 1999,
TH Cement's high grade cement production capacity was raised to
one million tonnes per year, making it one of the top three cement
producers in Chongqing. In mid-2001, Chongqing TH Cement acquired
80% of Diwei Cement in Jiangjin, the largest high grade cement producer
in Chongqing with an annual capacity of around 1.8 million tonnes.
In November 2002, Chongqing TH Cement completed acquisition of Qujiang
Cement, a reputable factory with an annual capacity of one million
tonnes located in the northern Sichuan area adjoining Chongqing.
With this acquisition, Chongqing TH Cement controls three of the
four largest cement producers in and around Chongqing with a combined
annual production capacity of 4.5 million tonnes , taking up more
than 70% of the high grade cement market in Chongqing. The recent
acquisitions of two medium size cement plants, each with annual
capacity of 400,000 tonnes, have further strengthened the Group's
coverage of the Chongqing market. TH Cement now has a combined annual
capacity of 5.6 million tonnes.
